Sitting Posture Without Back Pain

Many of us spend countless hours sitting behind a desk and then come home to slouch on the couch. What is that doing to our posture and core muscle strength?

Fig 1: Best Desk Sitting Practices

When we use furniture to completely support us all day long we stop using the muscles that were designed to do the work instead and you know what they say, "If you don't use, it you lose it".

Not using our muscles can then lead to muscle deterioration and eventually back pain. So prevention in this case is definitely better than cure because once you teach your nervous system bad habits in slouching, it can be hard to change.

Setting up your desk and chair correctly can be advantageous in keeping back pain at bay. The height of your desk and chair need to be at a level that your arms can lay flat on the table and parallel to the floor. Feet should be flat on the floor with chair tucked in close to table and tummy engaged to help maintain a straight back. You should be facing straight ahead, not sitting side on and twisting head, neck and back to view a screen. Chair should have lumbar support so you don't tire too quickly.

When using a computer, your screen needs to be at eye level so you aren't having to bend your neck to look up or down. Keep your shoulders relaxed and elbows close to your body.

In the video below Esther describes primal posture and how to sit without back pain.

Taking 3 minutes every couple of hours to get up and do some simple movements will help increase circulation to back and leg muscles so stiffness and soreness doesn't get a chance to settle in for life. Keep an eye out for my next post where I'll show you some simple moves and exercises.

If you found this helpful or know someone that would benefit, then please share the love :)
